The Westchester Modular Homes Story
The modular home industry has seen a remarkable transformation through the years and, Westchester Modular Homes (WMH) has stood at the forefront of these changes, leveraging the latest advancements in technology to provide innovative and sustainable solutions.
WMH was founded in 1986 by builders, Charles W. Hatcher and Thomas F. Flood 3d. They originally began building homes in Westchester County using traditional construction methods but when faced with a multi-unit development, saw the value in modular construction – homes built faster, more efficiently, with greater quality, and often at less cost.
First, they realized that being able to control the climate inside the factory meant that the building could progress regardless of bad weather. Weather delays and issues such as warping of materials are common issues with traditionally constructed or “stick-built” homes. Inside a climate-controlled factory, those concerns are removed.
Modular homes are built much faster than a conventionally built home. Various home components can be constructed simultaneously. For example, one team may be working on flooring while the other is working on the heating. Speed also means that the home buyers can access their home more quickly often saving on interim housing costs and construction financing.
When existing modular factories did not meet their desire for superior quality and the ability to offer custom modular homes, they decided to build their own factory in Wingdale, NY. They then sought the best talent to launch Westchester Modular Homes. For additional security, WMH also started to offer a ten-year structural warranty underwritten by 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty Corporation. (with zero insurance claims to date, WMH has earned the Platinum Award from 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty Corporation). The company grew beyond Westchester too, serving a nine-state area in the Northeast.
WMH also became 100 % employee-owned in 2000. Each staff member is vested in the company’s success. This translates into superior quality and fewer building delays when compared to traditionally constructed homes where consistent staffing is often an issue. WMH has also shown a strong commitment to employee retention. During difficult business conditions such as the recent pandemic, WMH was committed to paying staff during the shutdown. As a result, the company has very high employee retention in an industry known for high turnover.
Over thirty-five years later and with 8,000+ homes built, WMH continues its commitment to quality, innovation, and customization.
